As the year draws to a close, we at Mount Carmel are occupied with drafting a programme for the coming year 2009.
Even in the midst of this, in keeping with the spirit of the season, we are putting together two major programmes for the last few weeks of the year.
There are about 60 registered pupils at the primary school of Djalingo and it’s sad to note that most of them do not have foot wears; they all go about bare foot because their parents cannot afford one for them. In making our survey, we also found out that a pair of foot wear cost just €2. We are convinced that getting each pupil a pair will go a long way in minimizing the rate of injury and also in its own little way improve their quality of life. Having carefully thought it through, Mount Carmel has decided to make it a present for the pupils of Djalingo, to give them something to be thankful for and also to put a smile on their young faces as the year draws to a close.
During their last visit in Meiganga, Jacques & Julia visited the prison, and shortly put, the state of the prisoners was absolutely heartbreaking. Practically, they hardly ever get anything to eat and the hygiene is nothing to write home about. It’s a perfect ground for all sorts of infectious diseases and anyone locked in there is simply left for death literally put. A lot of these people committed petty crimes and for some, one cannot really put a finger on what they did. With the justice system being what it is out there (very inefficient), they are left in there to rot without any form of trial.
In keeping with our commitment to reaching out to the whole community, we came up with a programme for the prisoners to at least grant them respite from their plight.
We plan a day where we could prepare a warm meal for them and also get to present each prisoner with some toiletries that would do for at least a week. Our ultimate aim and desire in doing this is that these prisoners can at least get something to be thankful for. We hope and pray that they also end up getting a second chance at life and become productive members of their society.
We are all very excited to see what all these little acts of kindness will turn into in the coming years. One thing we are sure of as a team and certainly looking forward to is that a few years down the road a lot of lives would have been touched positively and these lives will go ahead to be a source of hope and inspiration for others.
We are very thankful for each person that is helping us make this yuletide season a memorable one for these children and also for the prisoners, from all our hearts we want to say thank you and God bless!
