At the moment our work is focused on supporting the village of Djalingo. At a village gathering held in June 2008 we could find out about their most urgent needs:
Diesel-driven wheat mill
In Cameroon one of the staple foods is Couscous. Unlike in North Africa it consists of a pasty mush made from manioc or maize flour. In a troublesome procedure the women have to grind the maize either by hand or they have to take it to a neighbouring town to have it ground there. That is very time-consuming (two hours walk) and costs money which most people do not have. We are confident that purchasing the mill will improve the nutrition supply of many families from Djalingo and facilitate their work a great deal. We also hope that the women can earn some extra money by selling the surplus flour.
Plough
The inhabitants of the village are dependent on agriculture. For that reason acquisition of an ordinary plough would alleviate every-day work for them to a great extent. As a consequence the community plans to cultivate additional fields and thus be able to harvest more than is necessary for mere subsistence.
Both the mill and the plough will be managed by the chief of the village and will be available to all inhabitants.
School and teacher
Some 40 years ago the government made arrangements for a primary school in Djalingo. However, only a small part of the public money meant for the construction of the school actually reached Djalingo. The result was a small building that consisted of one single room. After having taught four classes on a voluntary basis for many years, the teacher was recently faced with even another class due to the gradually increasing number of pupils. For that reason the government finally sent an additional (salaried) teacher. The first teacher still remains unpaid. Due to simple lack of space the two teachers have had to take turns recently.
In order to keep the school going we want to support the teacher with an amount of 25€ per month. Furthermore, we are planning to both renew and extend the building by 2010, the time when we (at least Jacques and Julia) will be on site.
